Itinerary

Starting point: Tagliaferro (hillside elevation, along the Via Bolognese) → Villa del Trebbio
From the hamlet of Tagliaferro, take a local road/path that climbs the wooded slopes toward Villa del Trebbio. The ascent is steady through chestnut groves and querceti, with dry-stone walls and stone farmsteads. Along the way is the village of Spugnole, documented as early as 1066.

Villa del Trebbio (historical-artistic stop)
First major stop. It is one of the Medici Villas (a fortified complex dating back to the 14th century, later modified), part of the historic Grand Ducal landscape and now included in the UNESCO site of the Medici villas and gardens. The surrounding area preserves historic agricultural layouts (terraces, olive groves). Note: the villa is private property; respect access points and signage.

Villa del Trebbio → Poggio ai Cigoli
Continue uphill on farm tracks and then a path: the woodland becomes denser (Turkey oaks, hornbeams) and metati (drying huts) and old roadside shrines appear at junctions. On the ridge of Poggio ai Cigoli , the first wide views open toward the Mugello, the Apennines, and Monte Senario.

Poggio ai Cigoli → Poggio alla Bugaccia
Follow the ridge on gravel roads and single track, with stretches of juniper scrub and sandstone outcrops. The environment becomes more “mountain-like”; in open spots you can see the Val di Marina, the Calvana range, and, to the south, the Florentine basin. Poggio alla Bugaccia is one of the most prominent knolls of the Monte Morello ridge (elevation around ~900 m).

Poggio alla Bugaccia → Poggio del Tesoro → Croci di Calenzano
Final segment with gentle ups and downs along the ridgeline to Poggio del Tesoro (another panoramic knoll), then a gradual descent toward the Croci di Calenzano pass (a road crossing and an excellent junction for returns/transport).
